Toluwani George: A Divine Ascent to Stardom in Showmax’s ‘Wura’

Toluwani George went from model to actress, achieving stardom without traditional auditions. Read the exclusive Nollywire interview, revealing the story behind her audition-free breakout role in the Showmax series 'Wura.'

In the dynamic world of Nollywood, where the pursuit of roles often resembles an arduous journey, Toluwani George emerges as a testament to a different narrative. With a career spanning a decade in the vibrant Nigerian creative scene, this actress has not merely stumbled into roles; instead, she has chartered an unconventional course, seamlessly blending hard work with a touch of divine orchestration.

While many actors endure a gruelling audition process, George, known for her standout performance as Eve in Showmax’s telenovela ‘Wura,’ confesses to a different casting trajectory. In stark contrast to Scarlet Gomez’s persistence in securing the lead role in ‘Wura,’ George’s journey seems almost predestined. She doesn’t grapple with numerous auditions; instead, she attests, “For every movie I have acted in, I auditioned for it. Although the audition mightn’t be the traditional one, I do audition for my roles.”

Hailing from Ibadan, Oyo State, but with roots in Osun State, Toluwani George initiated her career as a model before venturing into acting. Her role in Taiwo Egunjobi’s ‘All Na Vibes’ showcased a unique fusion of artistic talent and intellectual prowess, setting the stage for her ascent to stardom.

George’s breakthrough came with role in the popular Showmax series ‘Wura.’ Her performance as the innocent Eve resonated deeply with audiences, showcasing a depth and authenticity that solidified her presence in the acting realm.

Toluwani George’s Journey to ‘Wura’

Reflecting on her journey, George recalls her modest beginnings. “My journey so far has been pretty interesting because I do not have the conventional acting journey of going to auditions all the time,” she shared with Nollywire. “I just had one person tell me I could act. He sent me a script and told me to do a one-minute recording. After that, I got another job that eventually ended up going to Netflix. And then I got another job, another job, and another job.”

The story of how George secured the role of Eve in ‘Wura’ adds an intriguing layer to her narrative. “Truth be told, it was very random. I got an impromptu call that prompted me to send in a tape for a show whose name wasn’t specified. I recorded the tape and sent it out. And I got a call back to confirm my availability to be on set the next day. On getting to set, I did a screen and chemistry test with Iremide Adeoye’s character (Lolu) to ensure everything was great. Moments later, I got the role,” she recounted.

Delving into the essence of her character, George provided insights into the evolution of Eve. “My character has evolved and will continue to evolve as time goes on. Personally, Eve is interesting to watch because I can relate to the character. I have brothers with whom I share a familial bond. I also learned a lot playing the character. Although I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare to play the role, I was happy I played the character. It was an interesting learning experience,” she shared. “What I love the most about my character is how sweet she is. Eve is oblivious to the evils of the world. She’s just in her own space,” she concluded.

In the unpredictable realm of showbiz, Toluwani George’s journey stands as a testament to the unique intersection of talent, opportunity, and an occasional touch of divine serendipity. As her career continues to ascend, audiences can anticipate more defining performances from this rising star in the Nigerian entertainment landscape.
