Biography

Emil Garuba is a Nigerian-American screenwriter, creative consultant, director, and producer. His body of work includes feature films, short films, documentaries, and television programs, such as the films Moving On, Lovestruck, and many others, as well as the M-Net Africa serial opera Tinsel, which won the 2015 AFRIFF Audience Choice Award, and the documentary Silent Tears, which won the same award in 2014. For the Nigeria Integrity Film Awards platform (HOMEVIDA), Emil has worked as a script editor on nine award-winning short films. He has also served as a narrative consultant for the popular television show Sons of the Caliphate for EbonyLife TV. Additionally, he took part in the UK-Nigeria Script Junction Workshop, a project that the British Council created in collaboration with the 2015 Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) and 2015 African International Film Festival (AFRIFF). The 2019 family drama Lionheart, the first Netflix original movie from Nigeria, and the 2016 AMVCA-winning Feature Film Road to Yesterday were both co-written by Emil. 2019's political thriller 4th Republic was co-written by Emil. With the provocative and nominated 2020 short film Last Tango in Abuja, Emil makes his directorial debut. Emil is the Creative Director of Sutoritera, a media production firm that tells original, forward-thinking African tales to a global audience.
